School and Life Lessons
So, I have now had my first full day of teaching alone (sans Gareth).
I have to admit it was somewhat anti-climactic...hmmm. But all in all it was everything I have been told.
Some kids listen intently and make an effort to grasp the material, while others slouch in their chairs, heads down...Trying to remain unnoticed. Funny how that crosses cultures.
It feels like it might take both me and the children some time to get into a good routine.
Besides that, things are going well.
I went shopping today and I purchased a new coffee maker, since I accidentally smashed the one that Gareth left me. There is a great store near my house called Home Plus...some sort of Korean version of Walmart...they sell everything! It is wonderful if you need to find something (usually from home) in a hurry. Not my idea of Korean Culture, but it does help fade the homesickness to see a western looking store. And it doesn't hurt that it is open 24 hours a day.
Anyways, on my way back to my apartment, I realized something...Perhaps some sort of an epiphany.
For the last week I have been trying to figure out what is so different about Korea.
When friends and family ask, it is hard to put my finger on it.
For the most part, Korea is very similar to Canada. Koreans drive cars like we do...Even on the same side of the road, they eat food like we do (some of it not so much like us...But still recognizable food), they go to work, to school and pay taxes like we do.
Anyways, it is clear to me why it is so different here and perhaps why I like this culture so much.
They are happy people. Everyday I see parents playing with their children, making them laugh. People hanging out in the market, casually selling their products. It is as if the busyness of western society has not entered the borders of this beautiful country.
I wish I could bottle whatever this is and send it home for all of you to taste. Things get done here...but yet Koreans don't seem to carry the burden of stress like we do. Something to think about....
Anyways, I am off to teach some more...wish me luck
Ciao
Colleen
